What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai  is a traditional martial art with a long history and has now become a widely popular sport in Thailand, and is known by many people around the world. Many people still often call Muay Thai as Thai boxing, but it is different from Boxing (boxing) of the West. In fact, Muay Thai is a martial art full of spirituality and great religion.

Muay Thai is a martial art that combines attacks with hands, feet, elbows and elbows, which is the most impressive blow to knock down opponents of this martial art. In Muay Thai, the fighter uses his whole body as an offensive as well as defensive weapon and it is considered a strong and fierce style. Before becoming a popular sport, Muay Thai was once considered a survival weapon of the ancient Thai people.

According to studies,  Muay Thai  is said to have appeared around 1500 with the name Muay Boran (Ancient Boxing). During the reign of King Naresuan, all soldiers were trained in this martial art and considered it typical in fighting empty-handed against the enemy.

To celebrate and honor Muay Thai boxing, the Thai Royal Family takes March 17 every year as "fighters day" or "national boxing day" for the whole country to be grateful for.

6 things to know about Muay Thai.

When learning and researching about Muay Thai, you need to know the following:

1. The life of a professional Muay Thai fighter.

Professional Muay Thai fighters usually start practicing this sport at a very young age and around the age of 8 or less. Their day begins early in the morning and their schedule revolves around training to improve technique and maintain a fit body for the sport.

Every professional Muay Thai fighter has to participate in hundreds of fights throughout his career with a single goal of "becoming a champion".

2. Muay Thai is a martial art that carries the spirit of respecting teachers.

Muay Thai fighters always show a deep respect for their master under any circumstances.

With Muay Thai, the master will be responsible for training his disciples in fighting skills, mental strength, and faith. Before each match, they always wish their students victory, play safely and smoothly. The students will perform the Wai Kru ceremony - a ceremony to show gratitude and respect to their master.

Before the match, people also hold a ceremony to pray for protection from the gods for both fighters. For Thai people, winning is important, but honor is always the top priority. Win or lose, gladiators still show respect for their opponents and their opponents' teachers.

3. Muay Thai and spiritual beliefs.

Religion is an important part of Thai life and is closely related to Muay Thai. The headscarves and costumes that the boxers wear when competing have the meanings of luck and protection.

Thai people have great faith in the spiritual world. Before each competition, people perform a ritual to pay respect to the gods and that is called the Ram Muay ritual.

4. Muay Thai - Hope to change lives for unfortunate fates.

In fact, there are many reasons for a person to choose to pursue a career as a boxer from an early age and in most cases, it has nothing to do with aspiration to become a champion.

Children learn Muay Thai largely because of their parents. They hope that this martial art can help their children have a stable career and provide financial support to the family. In many rural areas of Thailand, Muay Thai is seen as the only opportunity to make money.

Children who come from incomplete or homeless families also see Muay Thai training camps as a real home.

5. Income of Muay Thai fighters.

One thing that may surprise you is that Muay Thai boxers only earn a fairly modest salary, averaging around 5,000 baht (equivalent to 3.7 million VND) per month. As for professional boxers, their salary is about 10,000 baht (about 7.3 million VND). The more he competes, the more income a boxer earns. So they often try to participate in as many tournaments as possible, despite injuries, illnesses and fatigue.

6. Muay Thai has a very high and comprehensive self-defense.

Muay Thai is one of the few martial arts in the world that is allowed to be used in actual matches. Although famous as an offensive martial art, Muay also includes counter technique to be able to take advantage of the opponent's strength. By practicing Muay Thai regularly, we will train our body and mind to be suitable for situations where we need to defend ourselves.

This is not only a sport that helps you simply protect yourself, but the fighting nature of Muay Thai also helps you to win in confrontations. You not only flexibly use kicks and knees, but also practice the strength of your hands and dodge moves in combat positions. Therefore, this subject helps to equip us with the necessary skills to become a real "warrior" in the face of difficulties that we will have to face.
